CMSD82 Internal Release, Acknowledging the Loss of an Amazing Colleague, Gabe Lazzarotto (PDF Format)

It is with a deep sense of loss and profound sadness that we inform employees of the passing of a respected educator and colleague, and a good friend. Gabriele (Gabe) Lazzarotto passed away on April 15, 2020 in Hazelton surrounded by his family.

Gabe spent his entire career with the school district working at Hazelton Secondary School, beginning in September 2000 teaching math, science, physics and computer technology. He worked tirelessly with passion for the school, students, staff and the Hazelton community. Gabe’s deep rooted values around children becoming successful learners guided everything he did. He truly made a difference for the students at Hazelton Secondary School. Gabe was highly regarded by his students and the teaching and administrative staff for his inspiration, calmness, strength and leadership.

Prior to his teaching career and following Gabe’s graduation from high school in Northern Italy, he became an academy military pilot from 1977-1981. His military pilot training provided an opportunity for Gabe to work within the airline industry in Sardinia performing aircraft maintenance and in Ireland performing both aircraft maintenance and teaching aircraft technicians. Gabe relocated to Canada in 1985, where he successfully completed his aircraft maintenance engineering degree receiving top student recognition.

A virtual Memorial Service in memory of Gabe was held on April 18 in Hazelton with his family, and friends from around the world as well as colleagues and community members. Gabe’s extended family and friends in Italy joined the virtual service via Zoom.

On behalf of the Coast Mountains School District, we extend our love and heartfelt sympathy to Gabe’s wife, Liz Lazzarotto, a French Immersion Teacher at Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School and long-term employee, and to their three loving daughters, all graduates of Hazelton Secondary School.

Hazelton Secondary School and Majagaleehl Gali Aks Elementary School share a great sadness with the Lazzarotto family on the loss of this wonderful individual. Thank you Gabe for everything you did for so many people over so many years – you will be dearly missed.

Sincerely,

Janet Meyer
Acting Superintendent of Schools
